Pig Eat Ball
A game by Mommy's Best Games for PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, originally released in 2018.
Mommy’s Best Games has traditionally been a purveyor of bloody explosionfests, with releases including run-and-gunner Weapon of Choice, multi-ship shmupper Shoot 1UP, and sidescrolling Serious Sammer Serious Sam: Double D XXL… and now they’ve returned with pigs, in space, eating tennis balls. While it’s certainly a tonal shift for the studio, their trademark zaniness is in place with overhead action involving a pig growing in size upon consuming tennis balls, barfing them out to get smaller, and eating them again to complete the level. The action takes place alongside numerous silly characters, notably the charismatic pill bugs who attempt to thwart the player’s efforts with a variety of weapons and machinery. And it’s all part of our mission.Despite the unusual setting, the story is quite traditional… a king has declared that his daughter shall be wed, and whomever wins a series of games shall have her hand in marriage. The daughter, who has no interest in being married, dons a disguise and decides to enter the games herself. But this is no ordinary kingdom… The kingdom exists aboard a huge space station, and the aloof king – named King Cake – has a cake for a head, with a royal guard that have cake slices for heads, and a daughter who is a pig named Bow.

Finger Derpy
A game by Mommy's Best Games for PC, Android, and iOS, originally released in 2015.
We don't normally cover games that are developed for mobile or tablet devices, but we are this time. Why? Well it's all part of our terrible hidden agenda. Otherwise, we're just normal blokes here to tell you about 2D video games...If you're fan of Mommy's Best Games' many shooters, then you might not have guessed that their next release would focus on horse racing... much less that the game would feature mentally deranged horses with fingers for legs, but such is life when game developers are given license to render their lunatic imaginings for everyone to experience.
You might also find yourself wondering what sort of equine escapades can be expected from this sort of game. Well, basically, you're controlling a horse, but rather than controlling the majestic beast with a controller or button presses, you are instead tapping your fingers rapidly on the screen. Alternating back and forth like you remember from your old Track & Field days will cause the horse to run in a straight line... but you can't just go straight; you need to navigate properly in order to complete a number of objectives.
Serious Sam: Double D XXL
A game by Mommy's Best Games for PC and Xbox 360, originally released in 2013.
What is Serious Sam: Double D XXL? How many modifiers can you tack onto a game’s title before it becomes overkill? Even abbreviating the thing, it works out to SSDDXXL, which is probably some internet code word for eating a dynamite sandwich. Well, when it comes to Serious Sam, there is no such thing as overkill. There’s also no such thing as abbreviation. When you fire up a Serious Sam game, you’re doing it to bathe in mindless gunfun (new word!), unreasonably large enemy onslaughts, and no small number of unrestrained pupil-dilating boss encounters. So what is Serious Sam: Double D XXL? Wasn’t there already a Serious Sam: Double D game? Yes there was. So what is this… A sequel? A re-release? A port?
The answer is: None of the above.
The “XXL” in the title is there to let players know that they are in for an improved and expanded 2D Serious Sam experience. This is Serious Sam: Double D with new enemies, dozens of new weapons, new levels, new gameplay, and a host of upgrades and improvements. For the full history of how a 2D Serious Sam game came into existence in the first place, be sure to check out our previous article and learn about our terrible hidden agenda. Otherwise, let’s strap in and see what this sucker can do.
The most immediately noticeable change in Serious Sam: Double D XXL is that the game has been given a substantial presentation upgrade. Smoother, slicker, and prettier is always a good thing in a game where your primary motivation is to make everything explode. Along with this comes fully voiced dialogue for all of the characters. If you enjoyed hearing Sam’s witticisms in previous Serious Sam games, then you’re in luck because John J. Dick is reprising his role as the titular character.
Explosionade / Explosionade DX
A game by Mommy's Best Games for PC, Xbox 360, Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox One, originally released in 2010, with the DX version released in 2021.
Explosionade - and the expanded Explosionade DX - falls into the 2D mech combat sub-genre, taking its inspirations from games like Cybernator, Metal Warriors, and Assault Suit Leynos. In these games, the player takes control of a huge mech that is represented onscreen by a relatively small sprite, but which has huge amounts of firepower. Navigation tends to be a bit slow and deliberate, with a focus on pressing forward, defending your position, and choking your enemies with mouthfuls of bullets, missiles, bombs, and whatever else you have stashed away in your arsenal. And, in Explosionade, you can double the firepower in local 2P co-op. Before we get any further, you may want to learn more about our secret and terrible Hidden Agenda. Or don’t. You can’t stop the apocalypse anyway…
Serious Sam: Double D
A game by Mommy's Best Games for PC, originally released in 2011.
Development of the Serious Sam series was started in the late 90’s by Croatian developer Croteam, and found its way into the US consciousness by way of Old Man Murray. By the time Serious Sam: The First Encounter was released on the PC in 2001, the FPS genre had become saturated with grand stories and scripted events in the wake of the extremely popular and well-received Half-Life.But Serious Sam harkened back to the days of classic FPS actioners like Doom, where the only goal was to kill monsters, find bigger guns, and kill bigger monsters. It was a refreshing reminder to FPS fans of what got them into the genre to begin with, while also offering something entirely different.
Shoot 1UP / Shoot 1UP DX
A game by Mommy's Best Games for PC, Xbox 360, WP7, Switch, PS4, and PS5, originally released in 2010, with the DX version released in 2020.
Before continuing, you may wish to learn more about the Hidden Agenda behind 8 Bit Horse. Or don’t. You can always eat candy instead. The second title from Mommy’s Best Games has arrived on the Xbox Live Indie Games Channel (dig deep into your Xbox 360 dashboard… the channel is down there somewhere). Mommy’s Best Games is responsible for the award-winning Weapon of Choice. While Weapon of Choice is a side-scrolling shooter, Shoot 1UP is a shmup with an interesting take on the traditional 1UP formula.
Weapon of Choice / Weapon of Choice DX
A game by Mommy's Best Games for PC, Xbox 360, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, originally released in 2008, with the DX version released in 2021.

Weapon of Choice was released in 2008 on the Xbox 360 in the Xbox Live Community Games category (now known as Indie Games). It was one of just a handful of games available at the launch of the service and it was, in many ways, the flagship title of Community Games, sporting the highest production values and tightest game design of any of its forerunning contemporaries. It also received numerous awards and accolades, including 3rd prize in Microsoft’s Dream Build Play competition, and winner of IGN’s 2008 Game of the Year in the Community Games category. And it is being released as a downloadable title for PC.
